Is RSS Still Relevant?

It has been suggested that once much loved RSS feed is on the way out. RSS stands for really simple syndication and allows users to follows news sites and blogs simply be clicking on the famous orange and white icon. Every time the the site updates with new information, this will be delivered to your RSS reader of choice.

There are a range of different RSS readers, such as the Google Reader which is incorporated into your Goggle homepage. Netvibes is more of an internet app which incorporates many different functions into one window.

Which ever you choose to use, they all work in essentially the same way, pulling together news and info from the sites you are interested in so you don’t need to go and visit each one separately, whether it’s about Dishwashers,Microwaves or the latest business news. So why is RSS on the way according to industry insiders?

It is all due to the social media revolution. People have learned that they can compile information from all the companies and friends they want to follow in their feed. Add the socail aspect of being able comment, share and discuss these stories with friends RSS suddenly seems a tad pointless?

Faceboook offers the same function, often with additional content only published on this specific communication channel. Rather than complimenting each other, social networks and RSS feeds seem to be competing, and Facebook and Twitter are winning! This is why services like Netvibes are so important to the survival of RSS, it essentially takes a ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ attitude and includes everything in one place.

The other advantage social networks have is that they are more rapid, an RSS feed you may check a few times a day but Twitter can be on the background constantly whenever you see an interesting post about Laptops for example
